Tell us about the Syrene concept/label? When did it come about?
Syrène comes from “sirène” , the French word for mermaid. The label came about in 2003 when I accidentally rediscovered my childhood hobby of crochet and started making bikinis. I have always had an artistic bent and enjoy painting, with a particular passion for colour blends and detail. Now I find I have an outlet for this creativity in my bikinis which are all individual works of art, and using dyes instead of paint and Swarovski crystals and glass pearl beads to give the pieces their individual sparkle and glamour.
Who is the Syrene woman?
The Syrène woman is confident, a little flirty, and wants something unique. She wants to stand out from the crowd in something she knows won’t be seen on anyone else.
What are your favorite pieces in the Syrene Summer 09 collection?
Each bikini has it’s own story and personality, but my favourites this year are the light and dark blue bikinis ‘sea’ and ‘ocean’ as they represent my favourite place on earth…the beach.
What are you currently obsessed with?
Indian art and design with the colour and sparkle, and the 20’s flapper era with the fun and movement in all aspects of the culture during that time…everything from beaded dresses to cocktails!
Who are your style icons?
There are a few! It would boil down to Edie Sedgwick, Greta Garbo, Gala Dali, and the Hindu godess, Lakshmi.
What are your top three style tips?
1. Sorry but ¾ length pants are a fashion faux pas in most instances.
2. Look after your posture…the straightness of your back can make or break style.
3. Having said that, ignore the rules and be you.
